Yoga Therapy

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy is a healing-oriented practice that enables an individual’s well-being through treatment of interdependent physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. Unlike other practices that isolate and address specific parts of the body, Yoga Therapy programs are comprehensive — tailored to your unique needs and circumstances, taking the whole person into account — since all aspects of your lifestyle can affect your health.

Yoga Therapy is based on a deep knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and the pathology of common diseases and disorders. It combines the ancient healing art of yoga with modern biomedical research, Ayurveda and evidence-informed practices.

This practice is not your everyday yoga class experience. With Yoga Therapy, you are the focus. You can “step into your power,” by identifying and building awareness of the unique and specific causes that negatively affect your health. Yoga Therapy’s natural healing pathways will address and treat your individual issues, enabling you to achieve optimal health and wellness.

Why consider Yoga Therapy as part of your wellness plan?

Yoga Therapy enables you to take an active role in your mental and physical healing by holistically improving your overall health and wellness. Yoga Therapy can be an adjunct therapy that complements existing treatments or regimens, or it can be used to directly treat a specific issue. The benefits of Yoga Therapy are not just physical — a recent study indicated that yoga-based interventions can also have a significant effect as an adjunct treatment for major psychiatric disorders.

Yoga Therapy can address or improve a wide range of conditions, including:

  • ADD/ADHD
  • Addiction
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Autism
  • Back Pain
  • Cancer
  • COPD
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Eating Disorders
  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Obesity
  • Osteoporosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • PTSD
  • Stress
What to expect from Yoga Therapy

To create comprehensive and lasting healing, the practice begins with consultative assessment and identification of your needs and goals. An initial intake discussion is complemented by a comprehensive physical evaluation and lifestyle assessment, so a holistic understanding of your health and wellness can be developed.

A preliminary plan of daily practice will be created for you, including one-on-one (or small group) sessions and “homework” — prescribed practices that enable you to advance progress towards your wellness goals. Plans typically involve traditional elements of asana (yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing techniques), but can also include meditation, self-reflection, cardiovascular, resistance exercises and evaluation practices.

The pace of the practice is designed to encourage integration and understanding, and techniques will be individually customized based on your progress, taking into consideration age, physical ability and cultural background.

Benefits of Yoga Therapy

Comprehensive and lasting healing comes from turning inward. When we identify the root causes of a problem we empower ourselves to heal, grow and understand what well-being entails. The ultimate goal of Yoga Therapy is individual empowerment — fostering awareness of how your body, behavior and personality affect your health,  teaching you the skills and applications to progress towards overall wellness.
